Manager: Roberto Mancini.
UEFA Euro’s best player award winner Gigi Donnarumma who has made a move to Paris Saint Germain after the Euro, is definitely one of the world’s top 10 Goal stoppers. He will be undoubtedly the number one choice for Mancini and will be a key player for Italy. He helped the side win back to back shootouts at the Euro against Spain and England. His replacements will be Napoli’s Alex Meret as well as former PSG keeper and currently Genoa gloveman Salvatore Sirigu.
Italian defense is always a scary thing for the opposition forwards. Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro all retired and Chiellini, Bonucci are on the verge of their retirements but Gli Azzurri defense is still pretty much solid. Juve duo Chiellini and Bonucci will make partnership perhaps for the one last time at the international level. Giovanni Di Lorenzo is expected to start at the right side of the defense while Leonardo Spinazzola, who left the field injured against Belgium, will retain his place in the upcoming mega event. Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni, Emerson, Rafael Toloi; even if they need to start from the bench, are definitely capable of facing any front line.
Coming to the midfield, Mancini is very likely to go with a 3 man mid. Jorginho will once again be the key with Marco Veratti at his left hand side and Inter Milan sensation Nico Barella at his right. Veratti is a much more experienced midfielder now and Barella is perhaps the most impactful player at Inter after Lukaku’s departure. Young midfielder Manuel Locatelli has been very much promising and will be a good substitute player for sure. Apart from them, AS Roma duo Bryan Cristante and Lorenzo Pellegrini along with Matteo Pessina and Gaetano Castrovilli, all will be handy options for the former Man City boss Mancini.
We expect Italy to field 3 forwards. Napoli skipper Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Chiesa are the two possible starters on the left and right side respectively. And at the very front, Ciro Immobile is the possible number nine to start the games. Andrea Belotti, Domenico Berardi, Giacomo Raspadori, Federico Bernardeschi are expected to get their places in the squad but they all are likely to come off the bench. The best advantage for the Italian forwards is that their side concedes comparatively lesser goals. Thus if they manage to score a few, that often see their side winning bigger games.
